Glass Mosaics Design and Wine 

Mosaic Art   

 

THE ART LEAGUE SCHOOL (TORPEDO FACTORY) MADISON STREET ANNEX:

Mosaic Art  Students will design and create a fine art mosaic piece using a variety of materials such as glass, ceramic, stone, shell, metal and polymer.   Students are encouraged to bring in findings and materials that they might want to incorporate into works and favorite tools they might want to use.  Planning and design including selection of materials, methods and tools will be covered.  Tools will be available for student use.  Several projects will be offered, or students may bring in a project of their choice with instructor’s approval.  No workshop projects are offered in this course).  All skill levels are welcome, from beginner to expert.  Materials fee due to instructor on first day of class.

Jumpstart in Mosaics Workshop  Learn the basics of this ancient art using modern methods and materials. Students learn how to cut glass and create a small mosaic piece using the direct method. The workshop covers planning and designing, including selection of materials, methods and tools. This is a great way to prepare for upcoming mosaics workshops, or refresh your skills. 

Mosaic Stepping Stone Workshop  Create your stepping stone design in the reverse and cast your own stone.  All experience levels welcome. 

Layered Materials Mosaic Landscape Workshop  Create a beautiful landscape mosaic layering stone, glass,   metal, beads and more.  Intermediate level.  Six hours.

Classical Mosaic with Smalti Glass  Students create a small classic mosaic in a mortar setting. Working with authentic smalti glass from Italy, Mexico and China, participants learn to cut smalti properly and try their hands at the hammer and hardie, the traditional method of cutting mosaic tesserae. Instruction covers how the glass is made and used. 
 

Mosaic Tapestry Workshop  Elaborate patchwork tapestry fabrics from Rajasthan and Gujarat India inspire this class.  Specialty glass (including Van Gogh glass and Italian millefiori), crystal and beads create multiple patterns of color and texture.  Materials will be carefully embedded (not glued on as with the standard direct approach) and projects are not grouted.  Students are encouraged to bring personal items such as beads, findings, jewelry, and glass pieces for incorporation in to their work.  Previous mosaic experience recommended.  Two days six hours each

Micro-Mosaic Jewelry Workshop  Create beautiful jewelry using glass from around the world including Moroccan nanotiles and Italian filato and millefiori. 

 

RESTON COMMUNITY CENTER:

Mosaic Art (404040-xx) ages 16+  (four weeks)   Mosaics are one of the original art forms and pieces can be made to last for centuries. Choose between several exciting projects, levels from beginner through expert, or bring in your own unique project (with instructor approval). Use of tools and materials included to complete one beginner or intermediate level project. Additional projects and expert level projects may require additional tools or materials. All mosaic methods taught in this class. All skill levels are welcome.  All supplies included in class fee. 

Fused Glass  This class will cover the basics of glass fusing and explores fused glass techniques. Depending upon individual interests, the students will work on cabochons (mosaic and jewelry elements), art panels or slumped projects.  Full use of manual and machine glass cutting and shaping tools will be made available.  Glass, adhesives and bails are included for several projects.  All work will be fired off-site after the last class and will be available for pickup at a later date.  All supplies included in class fee.

Micro Mosaic Jewelry (402623-xx)  ​Create beautiful jewelry using glass from around the world including Moroccan microtiles and Italian millefiori.  

 

Stained Glass  (405092-xx) age 18+  Create your own stained glass panel from our beautiful cathedral and art glass cllection.  Full use of hand and machine cutting and shaping tols will be included.  The Tiffany Method (copper foil technique) will be taught, as well as how to cut and shape our glass with accuracy.  Skill level beginner to intermediate.  All supplies included in class fee. 

Stained Glass Ornament (40263-xx) Learn the basics of the Tiffany Method (copper foil technique) in stained glass while creating a lovely stained glass ornament. Tools and materials included in the class fee. All experience levels welcome.

Traditional Micro Mosaic Jewelry (402658-xx)  Learn how to create an old world style micro-mosaic pendant using authentic filato glass from Murano, Italy.  All supplies are included in the class fee. 

Open Glass Studio (40xxxx-xx) ages18+  1st and 3rd Sundays of the month 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.  RCC-HW  Glass art enthusiasts are encouraged to participate in RCC's monthly Open Glass Studio that is held in the Woodshop on the first and third Sundays of the month, facilitated by the Glass Instructor. Participants worki Cng independently on projects must bring the necessary materials or make arrangements with the lab supervisor before hand. Reservations are not required.  Pay Drop-In fee at the RCC Customer Service Desk.  $10 resident / $20 nonresident each session

 

THE WORKHOUSE ART CENTER (LORTON):

Mosaic Art  Students will design and create a fine art mosaic piece using a variety of materials such as glass, ceramic, stone, shell, metal and polymer. Students are encouraged to bring in findings and materials that they might want to incorporate into works and favorite tools they might want to use. Students will learn about planning and design including selection of materials, methods and tools.  Several projects will be offered, or students may bring in a project of their choice with instructor’s approval. All skill levels are welcome, from beginner to expert. Tools will be available for student use.  (Meets in W-7, 716 flat room.)
 
Try Me Mosaic Art - Design and Build Have you ever wanted to try mosaics?  In this introductory class you will learn some of the basics of mosaic art, and create your own glass mosaic artwork using beautiful hand cut glass pieces.  Grouting and Finishing workshop is a recommended follow up.
 
Try Me Mosaic Art - Grouting and Finishing   2 hours Learn about the types of grout and finishing products used in mosaic art.  Bring your piece from your Try Me Design and Build class, bring a project from home to grout, or finish a piece that the instructor has created for you.  Materials fee of $5 due to instructor
 
Magic Carpet Mosaics two days six hours each  Create your own beautiful tapestry style mosaic using the direct method and setting bed technique.  Bring any beads, jewelry pieces or findings that you have collected for inclusion in your work if you like.  $85 materials fee due to instructor
 
Micro Mosaic Jewelry   six hours  Create your own beautiful mosaic jewelry using glass materials from around the world including Italy, Morocco, and New Zealand.  Depending upon your design and materials choice you can expect to complete between one and five pieces of jewelry.  Materials fee of $75 due to instructor.
 
Layered Materials Mosaic   two days six hours each.  Create a beautiful landscape design or collage piece, layering glass, stone, beads and more.  Bring any findings or jewelry pieces or pottery that you might wish to incorporate into your artwork.  Materials fee of $85 due to instructor
 
Pebble Mosaic  Create your own elegant pebble mosaic stepping stone using timeless techniques.  
 

No Days Mosaic Jewelry  Create beautiful micro-mosaic jewelry to wear or give as gifts, without the mess of sticky adhesives or grout. 

 
Pique Assiette Mosaic  Recycle and reuse while bringing new life to your heirloom china. Planning and design, use of tools and materials will be discussed.  
 

Cabochons for Mosaic Inclusion  10-1 Create your own fused glass cabochons for inclusion into your mosaic works.  Design ideas and cutting techniques will be discussed. Millefiore and dichroic glass will be available for use.  

Grout-less Mosaic  six hours Experiment with mastic, mortar and NO Days adhesives. Create your next mosaic masterpiece using a setting bed that will not require grouting.  Work with stained glass, smalti , stone, and more. Planning and design, use of tools and materials will be discussed. 

Mosaic Keepsake Mirror Workshop  Students will design and create a 10” x 10” mosaic mirror using a variety of materials such as glass, ceramic, stone, shell, metal and polymer.   Students are encouraged to bring in findings or a small photograph that they may wish to incorporate into their work.  All skill levels are welcome.  

Mosaic Methods Primer  Learn the four basic methods of mosaic art making:  Direct, Indirect, Double Direct and Double Reverse.  You will complete four small projects using the different methods, using different materials and adhesives.   We recommend taking the Grouting Basics workshop as a follow up.  
 
Grouting Basics  one day  Learn how to properly grout your mosaic projects.  We will use sanded, non-sanded, and epoxy grout.  You will learn about how and when to seal your mosaic project, and how to determine if you should use grout.  If you have projects completed in previous workshops or classes, you may bring these in to grout.  If you do not have projects to grout, samples will be provided.  
 
Grout-less Mosaic Workshop  Create your next mosaic masterpiece using a setting bed that will not require grouting.  Work with stained glass, smalti glass, findings, stone, shell, metal etc.  Intermediate level.
 
Garden Mosaics Workshop Learn the secrets of creating a mosaic that will withstand the elements.  Students will choose from a flower pot, stepping stone paver, or house number sign.  Intermediate skill level, all welcome.
